Here's another timely article from Rose Ritchi of "Organize Me Please:
Learn to say “too-da-loo” to those items that have been in your family, or were a great deal, or I might need it someday, or……………………………..
Just the thought of letting go of precious items can cause unnecessary stress in our lives. Sometimes we just need a better perspective when viewing these precious items so we can make better decisions without feeling the pain of a loss. Have a look at the following examples and see if you can identify with one so perhaps it will be easier to let go.
Value – Sometimes we feel there is a dollar value attached to our precious item because that is what we were told by a family member……..so long ago. Take the time to investigate to see if the value is still applicable. An easy way to start is to check websites such as Kijiji.ca, craiglist.ca or ebay.ca to see if your article or something similar to it is on one of these sites. This way you can get an understanding of what the market will bare for this particular item. Or if websites are not your thing them ask at antique shops what the market value would be. Once we have an understanding from a value perspective it may give us the permission to let go of it.
Space – When it is a family heirloom but you have no space for it perhaps at the next family get together (Christmas, Easter) you can ask family members if they would be interested in housing this particular piece. This way it stays in the family and someone has the spot to hold it. Space in any home is valuable real estate and remember if it’s not being used or it is left in a box then there is no real value to this piece except for taking up space.
Functional – If you just can’t let go of that cherished piece then think of ways for it to be functional. For example, if Aunt Mildred or your neighbour Mrs. McGillicuddy gave you her beautiful walnut dresser that doesn’t fit in with your décor, then perhaps it can go in the basement/storage to put your off seasonal clothes in. Or another example, Dad’s cherished rusty CCM bike that he used for many years that is just taking up space but with too many memories attached to it. Well then, snap your cap and get creative! Take Dad’s bike, spray paint it one colour and attach a bike basket to it with some lovely flowers and voila you have a beautiful lawn ornament for the season.
Make use of the item. Saying a proper goodbye to these items gives us the permission to let go of them. A lot of people receive china place settings from their families and they are cherished but not used because first of all, it is not their taste in a china pattern or they already have their own. A beautiful way to say goodbye is to use them for a month or so and then pack them up and perhaps donate to the RE/MAX Yardsale on May 26th. (Call Elaine at 905-333-3500 for more information on here to drop off our donations). This way you and your family had time to enjoy them. Also note there are a few china consignment shops in the GTA that will take old patterns. Give Organize Me Please a call and I will give you the information that you will need. There is always someone out there that will appreciate these fine pieces but you just have to find them.
Use technology – digital cameras are a godsend when capturing our cherished pieces. One way of using this is taking a great picture of the item(s) and using them for your screen saver picture on your computer. You can change your screen saver picture once a month and enjoy seeing these items without taking up precious space. Another creative way is take Dad’s CCM bike and throw a Christmas wreath on it and take the picture. With copies of this picture you can make a Xmas card out of it and send to all family members so they can enjoy seeing dad’s bike with a greeting of Christmas cheer from you!
Another way is using canvas to display your items. Take the digital picture and put the image on a nice size canvas and it can be displayed in your own spot in the house. Whether that is in your bedroom or maybe the laundry room, it doesn’t take up space but creates a lovely anchor because every time you look at it, you have fond memories and that is what should be in all of our homes!
At Organize Me Please, what is precious to you is precious to us; however, we are great sounding boards and have many creative ideas to provide answers to your dilemmas or just be present to guide you through the process of letting go. A gentleman at the Old China Pattern shop in Scarborough once said to me, “I have never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse.”, so with that said, just say “too-da-loo.”

Here's some tips on getting ready for the Yard Sale from Cathy Boytos,Trading Places Canada Inc.
TIPS ON GARAGE SALE FINDS
You will find some great treasures at some really great prices at garage sales! What's your best ever garage sale find? Bet you have a story or two to share. Was it the green alligator belt for 75 cents or an entire dining room set for $140.00????
Here's some tips ...
• Bring cash and make sure you have lots of change on hand ... most garage sales will not accept anything but cash and you could be losing out on a great deal!
• Please don't go to the sale at the crack of dawn! Volunteers and homeowners don't appreciate a knock at the door hours before a sale begins. However get there a little earlier like 10 or 15 minutes to get the best selection to choose from.
• If they offer refreshments especially kids selling cookies or lemonade, buy them! It makes the kids feel special and after all you're going to need some energy to hunt for those bits and pieces!!
• When looking for "stuff", check what condition it's in. If it's an appliance ask to have them plug it in to make sure it works. Stay away from baby furniture like cribs, change tables. If you insist on buying baby items, make sure you've done your due diligence. Check with the Canadian Consumer Product safety board first. Buyer beware ... these are not items you can return later. Ceiling fixtures ... unless you see them plugged you might want to reconsider. Some of the cheapy lamps and light fixtures can be a fire hazard.
• On the other hand, you can find some amazing deals if you know what you're looking for. All prices are final so if you see a treasure that's $100.00 offer 1/2 the price. Have in your mind what you will pay for an item and stick to it. But remember, if the garage sale proceeds go to charity ... don't be cheap ... you may even want to consider paying full price ... after all you know it's a deal and it's still a "find" but it's also about the funds being raised for a great cause. Many volunteers spend countless hours organizing garage sales and you want to go home feeling good about how you contributed to the day!
Happy Treasure Hunting!

Here's a great artcle from Rose Ritchi of Organize Me Please:
Clear the clutter, so family members will “utter”, ……… what a great home to live in!!
Here are easy steps to get you started.
1) Pick a room, any room BUT I highly recommend the basement, storage area or a cluttered room that you just can’t stand anymore! These areas tend to be out of sight, out of mind locations, so you will have great success in letting go of items since you have not seen or used them in a while.
2) It’s a family affair. You didn’t create this clutter on your own so pick a date with the family and get their commitment. Keep in mind, food and cash always perks up teenager’s ears. Plan on a morning or afternoon, not a full day because kids with electronics or cell phones tend to go missing in action!
3) The de-cluttering supplies:
- Drinks & snacks, don’t want anyone leaving the chosen area to get a drink that takes an hour to get.
- Timer, set the timer for an hour each time, when it goes off, then everyone can take a 5 MINUTE BREAK to have a drink, stretch or etc.,
- Bags/boxes/labels/markers – These supplies will be for departing items such as:
o Charity items – these items are not being used but suitable for the Yard Sale for the Cure May 26th 2012. We have volunteers who may be able to assist you in moving the items for the sale. Contact us at 905-333-3500 and ask for Leslie Bullock's office.
o Toss – these items are damaged, unsafe, or have no use, etc.
o Recycle – everyone seems to hold on to a gazillion magazines, a gazillion glass jars and plastic containers, etc., give them to the blue box.
o Family member items – Aunt Gertrude has departed but you just can’t give up that ugly (blank) so pass the guilt on to another family member!!!
o Doubles items – Am I seeing doubles?? If you are not using one, then you are not using the other, give one or both the boot!
o Memories –There are usually lots of items that have memories attached to them that bring up emotions, so be kind to yourselves. Take these items and put them in a box to go through when you have the time to truly enjoy them, then you can make clear decisions to let them go or not.
o Don’t belong – these are items that belong in other rooms; contain them in a box.
4) Focus, Focus, Focus. Stay in one spot at a time, DON’T wander. Don’t be distracted, let the phone ring, they will leave a message if necessary. With everyone staying on task your de-cluttering goal will become reality.
5) As each box or bag fills up take it away and put in one of the appropriate areas such as , i.e. by the front door, garage, car, blue box, etc., For charitable donation we are just one phone call away….905-333-3500 to contribute to The Yard Sale For The Cure on May 26, 2012
6) Look Ma we have space!! Yes that is what it is called when all the unwanted bags and boxes have been removed. Now for the fun part!
– With the left over items start to group “like for like”.
- Assess what you currently have that can contain your precious items. Are there shelving units? Do you have plastic containers? If not, let your fingers do the walking, lots of stores have websites for shelving units, containers, etc. This way you save time by measuring your space, picking out items on the websites and you can go and purchase these items or have them delivered.
- With your purchases assembled, start placing and containing your items; keep in mind, heavy items on the bottom of the shelf units and light items on the top. I highly recommend clear plastic containers and they are usually on sale during the spring season. Remember; if these items are to be kept then treat them properly. Using plastic containers keep things safe from dampness, humidity; possible flooding and they are durable and stack well.
Now for the final word…..maintenance. This is the easiest part of all when it comes down to organizing. Right now you have a clean organized spot, everything in it place! Let’s keep it that way, advise all family members that at the end of the day take 5 minutes to survey their areas and any item that is not in the correct place, pick it up and put it where it should go. With just 5 minutes a day your place will stay neat and tidy so you can get on with the important things in life, such as family time, me-time, golf course…………….
At Organize Me Please we fully understand the hurdles you can have with de-cluttering your home. If these steps are difficult to do with family, give Organize Me Please a call and we will be happy to come out for an hour to get you and your family back on track. We are offering a free one hour organizing service until May 26th, 2012 which is the date of The Yard Sale for the Cure. Book soon!!
